The Planting
Report Card

Our one-page stand worksheet, live. Work out seed spacing, how many plants are reaching full potential, and what the stand is worth per acre — then print it as a field report card.

How to use it

Count the stand, score the stand

The Planting Report Card is the worksheet our team carries. Fill it in below and every number recalculates as you type — nothing is sent anywhere, and you can print the finished card for the field file.

Seed spacing

Enter a population between 1,000 and 70,000 seeds per acre.
Required seed spacing —
1/1,000-acre row length — Count the plants along this length, multiply by 1,000 for actual population.
The field method & the math

Seed spacing is 6,272,640 ÷ (population × row width in inches) — 6,272,640 being the square inches in an acre.

To check the stand you actually got, measure off a 1/1,000-acre length of one row, count every plant in it, and multiply by 1,000. That gives your actual population per acre.

How many plants reach full potential?

Walk your 1/1,000-acre length and sort every plant into one of the four buckets from the worksheet. Ear-equivalents use the worksheet's weights.

BucketEar valuePlants countedEar-equivalents
1st Emerge (full ears) 1.00 0.00
1 Leaf Behind (3/4 ears) 0.75 0.00
2 Leaves Behind (1/2 ears) 0.50 0.00
Runt Plants (1/4 ears) 0.25 0.00
Total counted   0 0.00
Enter whole plant counts of zero or more.
Plants reaching full potential 0% 1st-emerge plants ÷ total plants counted.
Ear-equivalent stand — Weighted 1.00 / 0.75 / 0.50 / 0.25.
Actual population (counts × 1,000) — Assumes the counts above came from one 1/1,000-acre row length.
